How we do it

Good pruning is about timing as much as cutting. Prune a grevillea before it flowers and you lose the flowers; leave a rose untouched for a year and it turns into a tangle of thin canes. We prune each plant at the time of year that suits it, to the shape that keeps it healthy.

We prune roses, natives, flowering shrubs, fruit trees, and small trees up to about four metres from the ground. Larger trees, or any job near power lines, we pass to a qualified arborist, and we will tell you when a tree may need council approval before it is cut.

What is included

  • Winter rose pruning
  • Native shrubs after flowering
  • Fruit trees: citrus, stone fruit, figs
  • Crepe myrtles and frangipanis
  • Lifting low branches over paths
  • Small trees up to about 4 metres

In Glenmore Park conditions

Natives such as grevillea, callistemon and westringia do well in Glenmore Park's clay and heat, but they go woody and leggy without a light trim after each flowering. Roses are pruned late June to July, and frost-tender plants are left until the last cold snap has passed in late August.

When and how often

Roses and deciduous trees in July. Natives straight after flowering. Citrus lightly after fruiting. Flowering shrubs once the blooms finish.

Pruning questions

Do you remove trees?

Small trees and shrubs from the ground, yes. Larger trees need an arborist and sometimes council approval, and we will point you to both.

When should I prune my roses?

Late June to July in western Sydney, once they have gone dormant.

Can you prune my fruit trees to stay small?

Yes. Regular summer pruning keeps citrus and stone fruit at a height you can pick from.
